What is MMA flooring?

MMA stands for methyl methacrylate, an acrylic resin cured by a powdered benzoyl peroxide catalyst that triggers rapid polymerisation, rather than the resin-and-hardener reaction used by epoxy and polyurethane. The reaction is fast and far less dependent on ambient temperature than epoxy or most polyurethane systems, which is what gives MMA its two defining abilities: same-day service and cold-environment installation.

An MMA floor is built up in layers – primer, body coat (often with quartz aggregate or decorative flakes for texture and grip) and seal coat – each curing in about an hour before the next goes on. A full decorative or industrial system can go from bare prepared concrete to trafficable floor inside a working day. MMA vs epoxy vs polyurethane

Speed. No contest: MMA takes traffic in around 2 hours, polyurethane typically overnight to a few days and epoxy up to a week for full service. Temperature. Standard epoxy struggles below about 10C and many polyurethane systems are not far behind. MMA cures at temperatures where those chemistries stall, which is why cold store flooring is effectively an MMA market. Substrate temperature matters as much as air temperature, so cold-environment work is always confirmed against the manufacturer’s specification at survey.

Durability and chemical resistance. All three are hard wearing when properly specified. Epoxy often edges chemical resistance for many acids and PU cement screeds take thermal shock better – MMA holds its own on both and adds fast cure and UV stability (it resists yellowing in sunlight, unlike standard epoxy).

Cost. MMA is the most expensive of the three per square metre on materials. On a project where closure costs money – lost trading, stopped production, stock relocation – the total cost calculation often flips in MMA’s favour. Where the area can be closed for a week without pain, epoxy systems such as a self-levelling epoxy usually give more floor per pound.

Odour. The honest downside. Uncured MMA monomer has a strong, distinctive smell that travels through a building. It is managed with sealed-off work areas, extraction and out-of-hours programming – and it disappears once the floor cures – but it has to be planned for, particularly in food production and occupied premises.

How is an MMA floor installed?

1. Preparation. As with every resin system, the concrete is diamond ground or shot blasted to a clean, open surface and defects are repaired. Speed of cure does not excuse preparation – an MMA floor on a bad substrate fails as fast as any other.

2. Primer. An MMA primer, cured in around an hour.

3. Body coat. The main layer, often around 3 to 6mm for industrial floors (systems range from thin coatings to thicker resin screeds) with quartz or flake broadcast where texture and slip resistance are needed.

4. Seal coat. A final seal locks in the finish, matt or gloss. Roughly an hour or two later the floor typically takes traffic, subject to the system specification.
