What to know before you specify carpet tiles
Subfloor preparation determines the finish. Carpet tiles need a smooth, sound base, so the subfloor is levelled before the tiles go down. A poorly prepared base shows through as lipping between tiles and leads to edges lifting under traffic.
Match the grade to the traffic. Carpet tiles are graded for the level of use they will take. Fitting a light tile to a busy corridor wears it out fast, so the backing, pile and fibre are matched to how the space is used at specification.
Moisture has to be managed. A concrete slab that still holds moisture will disturb the tackifier and the tiles above it. The slab is tested at survey and a damp-proof membrane can be applied where readings are high before the tiles are laid.

Office carpet tiles
Office carpet tiles are normally a use class 32 or 33 loop pile in a solution-dyed nylon, laid in a quarter-turn or ashlar pattern so that a replaced tile blends into the floor around it. Offices choose tiles over broadloom because of churn rather than cost: desks move, cabling changes and a damaged area can be lifted and replaced without recarpeting a whole floorplate.
Acoustics are the second reason. Open-plan floors are noisy and a carpet tile with a heavier backing absorbs impact sound at the point it is created, which does more for the room than any treatment applied later. Where the office sits above another occupied space, the backing specification matters more than the pile.
Tiles are also the only sensible finish over a raised access floor, because panels have to be liftable for cabling. That means a tackifier or a release adhesive rather than a permanent bond and it means the tile grid and the panel grid should be deliberately offset so tile joints do not sit directly over panel joints.
Beyond performance, tiles give an office something broadloom cannot: colour and format can be used to zone a floor, mark circulation routes and separate quiet areas from collaborative ones, using plank formats or two tones of the same range rather than physical partitions.
Heavy duty carpet tiles
A heavy duty carpet tile is one rated use class 33 to EN 1307, the heaviest commercial classification, built on a dimensionally stable backing and almost always a low loop pile. The rating covers the whole tile rather than the yarn alone, so a heavy face weight on a weak backing is not a heavy duty product.
The step from class 32 to class 33 is where most specifications are won or lost. Class 32 suits general office areas and meeting rooms. Class 33 belongs in receptions, main corridors, lecture theatres, transport buildings and anywhere circulation concentrates, because those are the areas that determine when the whole floor gets replaced.
Backing type does much of the work. Bitumen backings are heavy and very stable, PVC backings are stable and moisture tolerant and polyurethane cushion backings add underfoot comfort and acoustic performance while keeping the tile flat. Each behaves differently on lifting and relaying, which matters on a floor expected to be reconfigured.
Two checks are worth making before signing off a heavy duty tile: its castor chair suitability where chairs run all day and its colourfastness where daylight is strong. Castor chair performance is tested under EN 985 and reported through EN 1307 as suitable for occasional or continuous use. That is a separate measurement from EN ISO 10361, which is the drum and hexapod method used to assess appearance retention. Solution-dyed fibre answers the second question outright, since the colour sits inside the filament rather than on it.
Carpet tile laying patterns
The four patterns used in commercial work are monolithic, quarter-turn, brick or ashlar and random. The choice changes how visible the joints are, how well a replacement tile blends in and how much waste the job generates, so it is a specification decision rather than a fitting preference.
Monolithic lays every tile in the same direction, which gives a broadloom-like sweep and shows any shading difference between dye lots most clearly. Quarter-turn rotates each tile ninety degrees to its neighbour, which breaks up shading and is the most forgiving pattern when a single tile is replaced years later.
