What flooring is used in a stadium?

Stadiums use resin systems on concourses, in kiosks and back of house, waterproof deck coatings on terraces and grandstands, safety flooring in wet and changing areas and commercial carpet or LVT in hospitality and boxes. The specification changes at every zone boundary because the loads, the spillage and the cleaning regime change with it.

The building has an unusual demand profile. It is closed and empty for most of the week, then it takes its entire annual footfall in a few dozen concentrated bursts. That means abrasion is driven by crowd density and cleaning cycles rather than by continuous traffic and it means a floor that fails is very hard to replace without missing a fixture.

Concourses and circulation

Concourse floors take the worst of it. Crowds move in one direction at pace, drinks are spilled continuously, food waste is trodden in and the whole area is washed down after every event, by pressure washer or ride-on scrubber drier depending on the venue. The surface has to stay slip resistant while wet with beer rather than water and it has to survive a cleaning regime that would strip a domestic finish inside a season.

The usual specification is a resin system laid as a seamless surface, either an epoxy or a polyurethane depending on the temperature range and the cleaning chemicals in use. Seamless matters more than it might look: a jointed or tiled concourse traps spillage in the joints and the grout lines are the first thing to fail under repeat washing.

Vomitories deserve naming separately. The tunnel exits from the concourse into the seating bowl funnel the entire block through a few metres of floor twice an event, on a slope, often in the wet and they wear faster than any other part of the concourse. They are worth specifying a step above the surrounding area rather than treating as part of it.

Colour is doing work here too. Wayfinding built into the resin itself, blocks of colour by stand or by entrance and contrasting bands at level changes, survives the cleaning regime in a way that applied graphics and signage tape do not and it helps move a crowd that is reading the floor rather than the walls.

Aggregate is broadcast into the surface to hold a slip resistance value in the wet condition. That is a balance rather than a maximum, because a surface aggressive enough to grip a spilled drink is also aggressive enough to trap soiling and make cleaning slower. The right level is set against the actual cleaning method the venue uses.

Terraces, grandstands and exposed decks

An exposed seating deck is a waterproofing problem first. The concrete carries the crowd load and the coating on top is there to stop water, chlorides and freeze-thaw cycling from reaching the structure and the reinforcement below. Get that wrong and the repair bill is structural rather than cosmetic.

The systems used are the same family as car park deck coatings: elastomeric polyurethane or methyl methacrylate build-ups that bridge fine cracks, accommodate thermal movement and carry a slip-resistant wearing surface. Detailing at upstands, seat fixings, drainage outlets and expansion joints is where these systems succeed or fail and it is worth more attention than the choice of resin itself.

Where an older deck is already deteriorating, the coating question sits alongside a repair question. Exposed reinforced concrete that has carbonated needs the affected concrete cut out and reinstated and an anti-carbonation coating is often specified on the soffits and exposed faces to slow the process down. That is structural repair work rather than flooring and it is priced and programmed separately, but it has to happen before a deck coating goes on rather than after.

Seat fixings deserve a specific mention. Every bolt through a waterproofed deck is a penetration and each one has to be sealed as part of the system rather than made good afterwards. Retrofit seating installed through an existing coating is a common source of later water ingress.

Kiosks, bars and catering

Stadium catering is high-volume food production compressed into a short window and it is specified on the same basis as any other commercial kitchen. Polyurethane screed handles the hot water, the fats and the thermal shock from washdown. Coved skirtings and falls to drainage let the floor be cleaned as one surface.

Bar areas behind the counter are wetter than most kitchens and get less attention in specification. Spilled beer is constant rather than aggressive and it is the cleaning chemistry used to shift it, more than the beer itself, that drives the resin choice. The staff working there are also on their feet moving fast between kegs and taps. A slip-resistant resin with coving is the sensible answer, laid up to the counter line rather than stopping at a visible edge.

Changing rooms, showers and treatment areas

Player and official areas are barefoot environments and that changes the slip resistance standard rather than just the number. A floor rated for shod use to DIN 51130 can still be dangerous underfoot when someone walks it wet with bare feet. Barefoot areas are tested to DIN 51097 and specified in classes A, B or C according to how wet the area is.

Showers and drying areas take the C classification, changing areas and their surrounds usually B. The finish is either a barefoot-rated safety flooring welded and coved, or a resin system laid with falls to drainage. Treatment and physio rooms sit closer to a clinical specification with a smooth, cleanable and impervious surface.

Hospitality, boxes and lounges

Hospitality is the one part of the building specified for appearance first. Executive boxes, lounges and premium seating areas take contract broadloom, carpet tiles or commercial-grade LVT, chosen for acoustics and finish as much as for wear.

Carpet tiles do particularly well here because a spilled bottle of red wine in one box does not mean recarpeting a floor. The tile is lifted and replaced between fixtures. The transition from a carpeted lounge to a resin concourse needs a proper threshold detail, because that boundary sees the whole room’s traffic funnelled through it.

Back of house and plant

Delivery yards, cellars, plant rooms and the service corridors that link them are industrial floors and should be specified as such. Cellars are cold, wet and take barrel traffic. Delivery routes take pallet trucks and cages. Plant rooms need chemical resistance and, where there is stored fluid, bund lining to contain a spill.

Line marking earns its place in these areas. Vehicle routes, pedestrian walkways and bay markings in a service yard are safety controls and they need to be laid in a system that lasts as long as the floor around them rather than painted on afterwards.

Working around a fixture list

Programme is the constraint that shapes stadium flooring most. Work happens in the close season, in an international break, or in the days between two home fixtures and the venue has to be safe and open for the next event whether the floor is finished or not.

That pushes specification towards fast-cure systems. Methyl methacrylate resins cure in around two hours and can be laid at low temperatures, which matters when the work window is a cold week in December rather than a warm month in June. They cost more per square metre than an epoxy, which is set against the wider commercial flooring costs on a scheme and they have a strong odour during application, which needs managing in an enclosed concourse, but the ability to reopen the area on time is usually what decides it.

The other reality is the substrate. Stadium concrete is often decades old, patched and carrying the remains of two or three previous finishes. Subfloor preparation is where the time goes and where the surprises are and a survey that lifts a section of the existing floor before anyone prices the job is worth the disruption it causes.

What to know before you specify stadium flooring

Zone the venue and specify per zone, drawing the boundaries where the traffic and the spillage change rather than where the walls are. Assess slip resistance in the wet condition and be explicit about which zones are barefoot, because that is the distinction most often missed.

Treat exposed decks as a waterproofing package with a wearing surface on top and detail the penetrations, upstands and drainage before choosing the resin. Confirm the work windows in the fixture list before anyone proposes a system, because the available window eliminates most of the options on its own.
