Why specify stone effect vinyl instead of stone?

Because in most commercial buildings the vinyl solves problems the real material creates. Natural stone and porcelain are heavy, which matters on a suspended slab or a raised access floor. They are cold and acoustically hard, which matters in occupied space. They are unforgiving underfoot for staff standing all day. They need a bedding and grouting trade with a longer programme and a cracked or lifted tile is a disruptive repair.

Where the real material genuinely wins is in prestige entrances that will be seen for forty years, in areas with extreme point loading and where the client wants a floor that can be refinished rather than replaced. Those are real cases and it is worth naming them rather than pretending the vinyl is always the answer.

Light reflectance and how the floor reads

Stone, concrete and terrazzo effects span an unusually wide range from near-white polished concrete to dark riven slate and that range makes light reflectance value a genuine specification input.

LRV is a measure from 0 to 100 of how much visible light a surface reflects. It matters in two ways. The first is accessibility: visual contrast between the floor and the walls, doors, sanitaryware and critical surfaces helps people with reduced vision navigate a space and a difference of around 30 points is a commonly used benchmark for contrast between critical surfaces such as doors, frames, handrails and sanitaryware under BS 8300-2 rather than a blanket rule that every floor must contrast with every wall. Water-jet cutting allows logos, borders, wayfinding and inlays cut precisely into the floor and welded or bonded in. That is a real advantage in retail, corporate reception and healthcare wayfinding and it is priced and drawn as a separate item rather than absorbed into the floor rate.

Laying direction and pattern matter too. Square tiles laid on the diagonal reduce the visual impact of a room being out of square, which is useful in refurbishments where nothing is parallel. Large-format tiles look impressive and are less forgiving of substrate variation, because a bigger rigid unit bridges more. As with planks, the setting out should start from a datum line and be drawn, not left to be worked out on site.

Wear layer and use class

The technical specification is the same discipline as any other LVT and it is the thing most likely to be skipped when the selection has been made visually.

Commercial products start at a 0.55mm wear layer and heavy commercial areas take 0.7mm or above. The EN ISO 10874 use class grades the whole product and is the fairer comparison between two options. One point is specific to stone effects. A heavily veined marble or terrazzo print hides abrasion better than a plain concrete effect does, because there is no consistent pattern for the eye to notice breaking up. A pale, uniform polished concrete effect is one of the least forgiving finishes for showing scuffs, marks and traffic routes, which is worth knowing before it is specified into a busy entrance.

Heat, glazing and dimensional movement

Dark stone and concrete effects absorb heat and vinyl tiles expand and contract with temperature more than sheet does. Because a tile floor is laid in units, the movement shows up at the joints.

Substrate, loading and where the weight went

The weight saving against real stone is one of the main reasons these products get specified and it has structural consequences worth naming.

On a suspended slab a thin bonded vinyl adds negligible dead load where a stone or porcelain build-up with its bedding adds a great deal. On a raised access floor the difference is decisive, because panel loading is limited and a heavy hard finish can exceed what the floor system was rated for. Acoustics and comfort

A stone effect vinyl is quieter and warmer underfoot than the material it imitates, but it is still a hard finish and it still makes a room sound hard. Where reverberation is a concern – an open reception, a dining space, a corridor that carries sound into treatment rooms – the absorption has to come from ceilings, walls or soft furnishings, because no hard floor will provide it.

Where impact sound into the space below matters, acoustic-backed versions are available and they give a useful reduction. Many of them trade that against lower indentation resistance, which matters at reception desks, display fixtures and anywhere heavy static loads sit permanently. Confirm that attic stock is ordered alongside the main quantity and stored on site, because print batches change and a tile replaced from a later run will not match. Confirm the LRV and check the contrast against the adjacent surfaces rather than choosing the colour in isolation. Confirm whether any area needs a wet pendulum value, because that changes the product family. Confirm solar gain and any underfloor heating and check the manufacturer’s temperature limit.
