The Health and Safety Executive treats a PTV of 36 or above as low slip risk in wet conditions and dry-shod healthcare areas such as wards, clinics and corridors are often specified to achieve at least that level of wet slip resistance where appropriate following risk assessment. The sheet itself comes in two constructions. Homogeneous vinyl is one material through its full thickness so the pattern is still there once the surface has worn and it can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. Heterogeneous vinyl has a printed design layer under a clear wear layer, which gives a wider choice of finish but a fixed life once that wear layer is through. Wards, corridors and treatment rooms that will be cleaned hard for twenty years usually take homogeneous.
Cleaning chemistry is what separates a hospital floor from an ordinary commercial one. Chlorine-based disinfectant at clinical dilution will dull a floor that was never made for it.
