In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test and expressed as a Pendulum Test Value, or PTV. The Health and Safety Executive treats a PTV of 36 or above as low slip risk in wet conditions and some higher-risk applications may require higher slip-resistance performance depending on the environment and specification. LRV and visual contrast for accessibility

Light reflectance value, usually shortened to LRV, is a number from 0 to 100 describing how much light a surface reflects. Near black sits close to 0 and near white close to 100. It matters because a partially sighted person navigates a building largely by contrast rather than by detail, so the difference in LRV between a floor and the surfaces around it is what makes a doorway, a step or a corridor readable.

The working benchmark used across UK accessible design guidance is a difference of at least 30 points in LRV between adjacent critical surfaces. Floor against wall is the one people remember. Floor against skirting, floor against door leaf and door frame and floor against sanitaryware in an accessible WC matter just as much and are missed far more often. Where a scheme cannot reach 30 points, the usual fallback is to introduce contrast at the junction itself, for example a contrasting skirting or nosing.

Two traps come up repeatedly. The first is that floor and wall are chosen by different people at different times, so a scheme that looked considered on a mood board arrives on site as a mid-grey floor against a mid-grey wall. The second is that a floor changes LRV when it is wet or once it is polished and safety flooring in particular reads differently in a corridor lit by daylight at one end and artificial light at the other, so the check is worth doing on site rather than on a sample board.

Stairs are the highest-consequence case. Step nosings need to contrast with both the tread and the riser so the edge is visible on the way down, which is when a missed step causes a fall. In a care or healthcare setting the same principle carries further, because contrast is used deliberately to make WCs, handrails and doors findable for residents living with dementia while keeping the floor itself plain, since strong patterns and dark inlays can read as a hole or a step and stop someone crossing the room.

Manufacturers publish an LRV for every colour in a commercial range, so the check is a specification exercise rather than a testing one.
