What is self-levelling epoxy?
Self-levelling epoxy (also called self-smoothing epoxy) is a two-part resin system – resin and hardener – mixed on site and poured across the floor in a controlled ribbon. How is it different from an epoxy coating?
Thickness and lifespan. A roller-applied epoxy coating is typically a few hundred microns thick – well under 1mm. It protects concrete and looks clean, but in hard use it is a maintenance item that needs recoating. At 2-3mm, a self-levelling floor is several times thicker and lasts accordingly – a properly installed system in a typical commercial setting is often a 10 to 15 year floor, where a thin coating in the same conditions can be a recoat item within a few years.
Surface quality. A coating follows every ripple and trowel mark in the concrete. A self-levelling pour flows out flat, so minor surface texture is smoothed away – though larger undulations, joints and level differences in the slab still telegraph through. Where the floor needs to be smooth for cleaning, hygiene or presentation, that difference shows.
Cost and downtime. A coating is cheaper and faster – that is its job. Where a floor also faces steam cleaning, hot oil or heavy thermal cycling – commercial kitchens and food factories especially – a polyurethane cement screed is usually the better specification than epoxy. How is a self-levelling epoxy floor installed?
1. Substrate preparation. The concrete is diamond ground to remove laitance and contamination and to open the surface for adhesion. Cracks and defects are repaired and moisture is checked – a damp slab needs a moisture mitigation system (an epoxy DPM or moisture-tolerant primer, within the limits the product allows) before any epoxy goes down. What self-levelling epoxy will not do
The name oversells slightly. Self-levelling epoxy finds its own level locally – it flows out flat within the area it is poured. It does not correct a slab that is out of level, fill holes or build falls to drainage. If the substrate has significant level problems, the fix is a cementitious levelling screed or repair work first, then the epoxy over the top. It is also not the answer for a floor that is actively cracking or breaking up – unstable movement in the slab will telegraph through any resin laid over it, which is why damaged floors are assessed for repair before a new surface is specified.
Standard self-levelling epoxy usually cures to a smooth, low-texture finish. Where grip matters – wet processes, ramps, trafficked walkways – an aggregate can be broadcast into the system or an anti-slip additive specified, at some cost to the mirror-flat look.
